Sensei Throop's club was originally named "Bu Yu Kan Martial Arts Studio".
It was one of the few, long time running, martial arts clubs in the Kingston area.
It was also the first club in Kingston and area to have a separate youth and adult classes, which is nowadays the norm.
The club initially rented space from the City of Kingston owned and operated, Artillery Park Aquatic Centre located on Bagot Street.
Then the club moved to a rental property in downtown Kingston on Princess Street.
For a while a satellite club was also established at St. Lawrence College (Kingston Campus).
The club was finally located to just outside of the city, in Glenburnie.
The club was very active in the 80's and 90's in Open tournaments throughout Ontario,
and in the Shorinjiryu invitational tournaments held in Ontario, Quebec and in the U.S.A.
Sensei Throop did some research to understand his own spirituality and he asked Shihan Ishino to help with a new name for the club.
The name "Ten kei kai" was provided, meaning: Ten = Heaven; Kei = Blessing; Kai = group, association.
The club operated as
Ten kei kai for a number of years.
